چکیده

We consider the procedure of isochrone fitting and its application to the study of red giant branch (RGB) photometry in old stellar populations. This is extended to consider the problems introduced by the inclusion of lower-magnitude regions of the Colour Magnitude Diagram (CMD). We refer especially to our previous paper Frayn & Gilmore (2002), where the details of our isochrone interpolation and fitting code are explained. We address the systematic errors inherent in the process of isochrone fitting, and investigate the extent to which simple stellar populations can be recovered from noisy photometric data. We investigate the effects caused by inaccurate distance estimates, isochrone model variation and photometric errors. We present results from two studies of approximately coeval stellar populations, those of the Milky Way Globular Cluster System (MWGCS), and the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy. In addition, we introduce a new method for estimating distances using photometry of the tip of the RGB which is significantly more robust than the standard edge-detection filter.

Determination of the Distance to M33 Based on the Tip of the Red Giant Branch and the Red Clump

We have determined the distance to M33 using the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) and the red clump (RC), from the V I photometry of stars in ten regions of M33 based onHST/WFPC2 images. The regions used in this study are located at R = 2.6 − 17.8 arcmin from the center of M33. The distance modulus to M33 obtained in this study, for an adopted foreground reddening of E(B − V ) = 0.04, is (m −...

Near - Infrared photometry of four metal - rich Bulge globular clusters : NGC 6304 , NGC 6569 , NGC 6637 , NGC 6638 ⋆

We present high-quality near-Infrared photometry of four Bulge metal-rich globular clusters, namely: NGC 6304, NGC 6569, NGC 6637 and NGC 6638. By using the observed Colour-Magnitude Diagrams we derived a photometric estimates of the cluster reddening and distance. We performed a detailed analysis of the Red Giant Branch, presenting a complete description of morphologic parameters and evolution...

The Analysis of Red Giant Branch Photometry in Galaxies

We present an analysis of the many possible methods for simulating and analysing colour-magnitude diagrams, with application to studies of the field halo stellar populations of resolved galaxies. Special consideration is made to the analysis of stars on the Red Giant branch (RGB), and methods for obtaining metallicity distributions for old populations based on analysis of evolved sections of th...

To appear in ApJL The distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using red clump stars, and the discrepancy between red clump and tip of the red giant branch distances

The distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using red clump stars, and the discrepancy between red clump and tip of the red giant branch distances ABSTRACT I determine a distance to the Fornax dwarf galaxy using stars in the red clump and at the tip of the red giant branch. They are in very good agreement, with µ 0 = 20.66 mag. Comparing the magnitudes of the tip of the red giant branch and of the ...

Ages of globular clusters: a new approach

We have applied a new method to analyze the horizontal branch (HB) morphology in relation to the distribution of stars near the red giant branch (RGB) tip for the globular clusters M22, M5, M68, M107, M72, M92, M3 and 47 Tuc. This new method permits determination of the cluster ages to greater accuracy than conventional isochrone fitting. Using the method in conjunction with our new high-qualit...
